FIGURES 4.15A–C Figure 4.15a was taken without a V-flat, and the shadows were too dark for my taste. In Figure 4.15b, the V-flat was placed about five feet from my subject, softening my shadows a little. In Figure 4.15c, the V-flat was moved closer, about two feet from my subject. Notice how the light in the shadows changes as the V-flat was moved closer.

As you can see, bouncing light back into your shadows is an easy and effective way to control contrast when metering for your highlights. If you find your image is still too contrasty for your taste, even after introducing a reflector, you can take a midtone reading. Midtone readings measure the light that is halfway between your highlights and your shadows (FIGURE 4.16). Taking a midtone reading on a digital camera will brighten up the overall image, especially when paired with a reflector on the shadow side. It will add a half to full stop of exposure, brightening up the image while still protecting your highlights.
